Nutella Brioche~

So nice to have one of our favorite shows back on.
We kept telling our kids they would love this..finally three seasons later they tried it and fell in love with the show too..They even have tea during the show..
Imagine my surprise when my daughter handed me a gift when she walked in Christmas morning..and this was in it..cute little DA box..and inside this replica..it's maybe 2 inches across..
and if you push on the highest tower..the lights go on and the theme score plays♥
I thanked her ..quite more excitedly than that ..and she said..Fred bought it for you..
Sweet.Grateful.
A little booklet with the primary characters with quotes..

So maaaaany classic quotes..
Not all from the book..

"Get back in the box Miss Sharp"
"Do I look like a frolicker?"
"Oh dear ,have you swallowed a dictionary?"
"What is a weekend"?

I can hear all their voices when I read quotes from the show..

Definitely Downton Worthy is  this brioche..

In December..I happened to see Jamie's Jam Brioche on her wonderful blog~
I had seen these here and there on Pinterest..but they seemed..quite impossible..I guess I never really read into them..just looked and lusted.
Jamie made it sound doable and her ethereally gorgeous brioche made me do it:)
The link to the video helped too.
We were having the boys for a sleepover New Year's Eve..I was either going to make them Krusteez Waffles ;) or Eggos..or this..
So NYE day..around 9.30 AM I started this..
I have a very bad habit..I skip parts of recipes..I gather the general gist of a recipe and immediately step into the process..Don't do as I do:)
So I never saw that it could take up to 4 hrs to rise/proof..
And it was frigid cold here..we don't heat our homes to 70F in QC in the winter...we dress warmly even.. indoors~
So..I finally finished the brioche at 4.30..dusk..right when the boys were arriving so I snapped 38 photos in dusk in 10 mins max:)..racing my brioche to a chair in the dining room(west facing) by a candlelit window..
So the photos are misrepresentative.
It actually looked better in person.
And it was so good!
So go see how Jamie did hers..I swear my mise en place was a lot messier..

I ran out of Nutella..God Bless Jacques he went out and came how w/ a similar spread by Laura Secord..and she is an institution here.
I was gloating when I saw my brioche..not even as feminine and perfect as Jamie's..but still I gloated inside myself.
It's sinceriously fun and challenging... to make..minimally challenging.. but don't think you can say..I will make these for breakfast now..in QC in the winter..
Unless your yeast is on steroids.Or you have an oven w/ a proof setting.
To me the rolling out the dough was the trickiest..it felt like I didn't have enough dough..but I did..and knowing how much the boys love Nutella..I put too much so some of my ends even after repinching..split a bit..but still quite divaish I found.
Breakfast was super easy..yogurts with the flower on it plse(vanilla)..banana..and brioche..I warmed up pieces for them in the microwave..just like 10 seconds.
I LOVED making this.
Thank you Jamie for the inspiration for the boys NYday breakfast and my fun NYE day.

Times sure have  changed from when I was going out in a sequined halter top and palazzo pants on New Years Eve.

  1. Quelle superbe brioche bien gourmande ~
Cette pâte à tartiner est pour sûr meilleure que du Nutella je suppose !
Elle donne des étoiles dans les yeux ~

    1. Hi Nellie..basically it is 2 rounds of puff pastry with an almond type filling..you hide a trinket in it..think the little ceramic toys you find in old tea boxes..and the one that finds it...is king for a day..as the years go on..some make chocolate almond filling..pistachio almond..jam..the top of the puff pastry is scored..
      Quite pretty..
I like the trinkets..or babies you put in them..a crown is often nestled on top.
      It is a delicious thing.

  4. Monique, your brioche is gorgeous and your Nutella is much more sophisticated than we can buy here. I found in Provence that they devote an entire aisle in the supermarket to Nutella it is so popular. Bless Jacques, Meakin has had to run out for me at the last minute too. We're both really lucky we have such thoughtful husbands.

  5. Would have loved to see you in your sequined halter and pants. Can you believe I've never tried Nutella? Just don't know what to eat it on. I loved Downton last night, especially when Carson said he wouldn't allow "smut" talking around there. Sounds like your holidays were wonderful. And, that brioche sounds delicious. Guess I need to try Nutella baked in something.

    1. We would have had to have known each othe over 41 yrs ago..that was the last of the halter tops..you can make the brioche with jam etc..We have that Chico spread here for the boys..
It is very popular in France as Sam said..Italy etc..their quotes are brilliant on DA..I thought Carson would have been more visibly and finally smitten with Mrs Hughes.
I just cannot wait until next week now.
      What a beautiful show.

  6. Loved this post, you really do give yourself challenges to achieve, you must have lots of patience The Nutella Brioche looks delicious. All my grandsons love Nutella, they spread it on warm brioche here in France & the two younger ones in Denmark spread it on warm cinnamon buns, However they are only allowed it on special occasions. You really will enjoy this Downton Abbey series. it finished here just before Christmas. My Sunday evenings watching TV won't be the same.

  10. I watched last night but Jerry is not a fan. His mother and father were from Ireland.... That brioche is beautiful but I want to know about the cookies. They look yummy. I have already started to look for Valentine's day baking supplies. See anything that we must have? I remember halter tops too and hot pants and mini skirts under maxi coats.

    1. Me too..had the hot pants..and mini skirts under maxi coats..you made me smile and remember!
Then ..I turned into Holly Hobbie:-) I loved my Maxi Coat..felt like Dr Zhivago..
Hmm Valentines..I pinned last year and this year..
The stamp I used for DA..was from Amazon in the USA..I made Donellas cookies with it..the recipe is the one I posted with the orange in it..the one I made some Christmas cookies with..
If I was you..or is it were?
I would head to World Market..and ficus Valentines on DA..they have mugs and bags and food..
Would be sweet and romantic..what do you think?
Or go to Fancy Flours..Crate and Barrel..etc and see or look for different!
You have a broader horizon than I do:-)

  11. The wreath recipe? They were yummy but I found it hard to get the dough together. I worked a few at a time but the taste was delicious. My melting chocolate skills were pathetic. I might try to make them in a food processor so I get the butter to incorporate into the dough for rolling ( you know how I have to do a recipe more than once before I get it!). Thanks for all your suggestions. I have been on crate and barrel. Sur la table and William Sonoma but it might be too soon. Home goods had nothing yet. Off to look at your pinterest and the sites you recommended.

  13. Your brioche looks delicious, Monique! I've made it once and used the dough to make several things while I had extra. When I lived in the north country, I always put my dough to rise near a radiator!
My daughter was here to see the first Downton episode of the season...she had missed the entire season before, so we watched it together last week, preparing for the opening. She had forgotten how much she liked it. Honestly, Maggie Smith is a hoot. You catch more side comments she's made when you watch a second time.
    Stay warm!

I enjoyed this season's opening. So much unrest about the future. If they only knew. I guess it is a blessing not to know the future.

    1. Penny.. if you can believe this..in bed this morning under layers..I wondered if I would like to know the future and the answer is no.I think it has to hit us unprepared so we can cultivate the courage to face it..or rejoice in it's awesomness:)
      Loved the opening..

  15. I love that word, Diva-ish! This bread is certainly that! You did a fabulous job! I think your photos are great even with fading light. I hate the light at this time of year. It is so poor. My pictures are really suffering. I love LOVE Downton. You got such a beautiful little gift there. I have never seen anything like that over here. How lovely. I am saving up to buy the latest series on dvd. It's a cracker! You will love it and it will make you cry a bit too. Love and hugs. xoxo

      LOVE THEM..

I have a funny story I tried a new loom and making a neck warmer for Oli..when I finished..I saw that it could only get on Ray's neck(their chiuhaha)..

  27. I must say, fabulous looking dish. It is a work of art worthy of a Downton tea to be sure. I love the music for so many of those BBC-ish programs. I remember it took me ages to get the Pride and Prejudice theme out of my head. I worked with the daughter of the man who composed it and I chided him about the ear worm his score had installed in my head when he came to set. He laughed, wickedly. The Downton Abby score is nearly as good! Can't wait to have a reason to make this brioche!
